Hollow, where representation uniquely intersects at the crossroads of deliciously creepy horror and authentic identity. From cover to cover and all the pages in between, this queer YA cult horror will have you falling in love with its newly diagnosed autistic teen MC (main character) Cassie, horrified at its hauntingly eerie community "The Roost", and admiring its stance on unmasking and embracing neurodiversity in the hopes of living authentically. What sets this story apart is that Cassie is not just any character, she is a young queer autistic person who experiences challenges while confronting her identity, seeking to understand herself in a society that often misunderstands or misrepresents individuals like her, and showcases her moments of vulnerability and strength, as she learns to embrace her authentic self amidst pressure to conform. While in the community of "The Roost", we witness Cassie on this journey as the lines between reality and the supernatural blur and where dark forces threaten to destroy everything. At its core, "Hollow" sheds light, advocates for the celebration of differences, and embracing neurodiversity regardless of stigma or challenges.
Hollow's story encourages its readers to reflect on the pressures that are often forced onto us by society, pushing individuals to hide their true selves in order to fit into these ridiculous preconceived boxes. As a cult horror novel, it expertly blends an eerie atmosphere, with exploration of identity and acceptance that creates a narrative that is not only heart-pounding but also thought-provoking. I one-hundred percent believe that readers will enjoy the juxtaposition of horror and heartfelt representation, making Hollow a standout work that invites reflection on the nature of fear, belonging, and the courage it takes to be yourself. How do I know this you ask, well the story hasn’t even been officially released yet and it already has average rating of 4.79 out of 5 stars on Goodreads, as well as, over 2,000 people have who already added it to their “Want to Read” lists, and is in the top 10 for “Most Requested Horror” and “Most Requested Teen & YA” books on NetGalley.com as of the time of this articles publication. Don’t take my word for it, but the numbers don’t lie.
The Review
“Hollow” a YA horror centers around high schooler Cassidy “Cassie” Davis after her move back to her hometown of Deep Glen, NY following an autism diagnosis. As Cassie attempts to rekindle relationships with her once close-knit group of friends Blake, Jac, and Mel; she also has to overcome her internal struggles as well which is easier said than done. When the foursome decides to try and reconnect over a backpacking outing together, things take a sinister turn and there’s no telling if they can ever go back to what was. The narrative that author Taylor Grothe weaves was not only shrouded in mystery and suspense but also chilling horror. I loved so many aspects of this story but some of my favorite things included the positive neurodivergent representation, the bi/pan representation, and the attention to detail throughout. To say I was ecstatic to have had the ability to read this book pre-pub was an understatement and it really met and exceeded my expectations. I found “Hollow” to not only be engaging and entertaining but also thought provoking. The ending was unexpected and surprising in the best way! It’s a definite winner and I can’t see how fans of YA & horror won’t love it!
