If you know me personally, then you've probably heard me say a time or two that, "I'm an old soul in a young body (not so young anymore but that's besides the point, haha). This phrase has become somewhat of a mantra for me, encapsulating a feeling that has lingered throughout my life. I'm unsure why, but I feel so connected to the past and I have since a very young age. This connection is not merely a fleeting sentiment; it is a deep-rooted appreciation for the experiences, values, and stories that have shaped our world long before my own existence. It may explain why I find such joy and solace in immersing myself in literature written in time periods that came before my time in this world. This affinity with the past has become particularly evident in my reading choices, where you can see that I am clearly drawn to narratives that echo the voices of those who lived through different eras.
A prime example of this is the book Homecoming Queen, which captivated me from the very first page. The author masterfully weaves a tapestry of characters and events that transport me to the instability of the 1970s, a decade marked by social upheaval, cultural shifts, and a quest for identity. As I read, I felt as though I was right alongside its characters, experiencing their triumphs and tribulations, their hopes and fears, as if I were a part of their world. The realistic descriptions and authentic dialogue allowed me to visualize the setting, the fashion, the music, and the societal norms which immersed me into a time that, while distant, felt incredibly relevant to my own understanding of life. The characters’ struggles resonated with me, revealing universal themes of love, loss, and the pursuit of finding oneself that transcend time. Each page turned was not just a step back in time, but a journey into the very essence of what it means to be human, regardless of the era in which we find ourselves.
The Review
“Homecoming Queen” centers around Llayne Robertson a young coed in Michigan during the tumultuous 1970s. The story is primarily a coming of age novel but also has historical parts and romance mixed in as well. I thought this was such a touching story and it really came full circle. I liked Llayne’s character and her story had me on a rollercoaster of emotions. I felt heartbroken for her, understood her, and was rooting her on until the very end. I will be seeking out more books by author Linda Hughes, and would recommend this book.
