E-reader on table with book cover "Lowercase" by Hayley B Halliwell. Two figures in a library, headphones beside it, minimal decor.

When I initially signed up to read this book I had no idea just how much this book would touch my heart and soul. I mean, I obviously read the description so I had the general gist of what the story entailed. However, what I didn't realize was that this narrative would strike a nerve so deep that my heart would feel like it was shattering. The author crafted a story that in my opinion was incredibly raw and powerful. If you have ever experienced grief and the aftermath on the path to healing then I think you can understand just what I mean. We all inevitably experience loss, grief, and healing throughout the duration of our lives but to be able to clearly and expressively describe that journey is a whole other thing.

I also had no idea initially that this book was inspired by an event that the author herself experienced which only added authenticity and emotional depth to the story. Not only was the book inspired by a personal event, but one of the characters is based on her best friend growing up. Additionally, the author also chose to set this beautiful story's release on her friend's birthday as a way to pay tribute and honor her. This decision is a clear indication of the importance of the friendship in the author's life and was a meaningful way to pay homage to a lost loved one. As a reader, I can appreciate the layers of emotion that were woven into the fabric of this tale. Just knowing that this was not just a work of fiction but a heartfelt homage to a friendship that shaped the author and her life was truly inspirational.

The Review

“Lowercase” is a heart shattering story of a young woman, Ellessy Porter, who is handed unexpected tragedy and has to figure out what to do with it. Going into this book, I did not expect it to touch me as much as it did. It was a good example of how people can gather strength in the face of adversity. How loss, grief, and love can look different for everyone but if you have a strong community rallying around you it can make the pain feel bearable. Ellessy was raw and life-like and I appreciated how her character‘s personality was written. The plot had moments of deep sadness but also allowed for healing which really brought everything full circle. I was impressed and would definitely read more by this author in the future.
