Book "North is the Night" by Emily Rath on marble table. Dark cover with trees and polar bear. Nearby are glasses and a newspaper.

There's something incredibly special about books that possess the remarkable ability to transport you to a different realm, whether you are already familiar with it or encountering it for the very first time. These literary works serve as portals, inviting readers to step beyond the confines of their everyday reality and dive into worlds crafted from imagination. Books that immerse you into a culture that you may have no prior knowledge of often serve as windows into diverse experiences, allowing you to explore traditions, values, and lifestyles that are vastly different from your own. This exposure not only broadens your understanding of the world but also fosters empathy and appreciation for the richness of human experience. As you turn the pages, you are introduced to new characters whose lives you become unintentionally obsessed with, as if they were old friends whose stories you can’t help but follow. These characters, with their unique struggles, successes, and complexities, draw you into their narratives, making you feel their joys and sorrows as if they were your own. You find yourself rooting for their success, mourning their losses, and celebrating their victories, all while becoming deeply invested in their journeys. The emotional connections formed in these stories can linger long after you’ve closed the book, leaving a permanent mark on your heart and mind.

Fantasy books, in particular, have a unique tendency for grasping hold of readers and immersing them into their whimsical places filled with enchanting landscapes and extraordinary beings. This genre often presents a tapestry of magic, adventure, and the possibility of the impossible, which captivates the imagination and invites readers to suspend their disbelief. From sprawling kingdoms ruled by powerful sorcerers to mythical creatures that roam vast, uncharted lands, fantasy literature opens the door to realms where the ordinary laws of nature are bent or broken. These fantastical settings are frequently populated with magical characters, each possessing abilities that defy reality and challenge the limits of human experience. From wizards to elves, dragons, and other mythical beings whom inhabit these stories, and whose adventures often involve epic quests, battles between good and evil, and the exploration of profound themes such as friendship, sacrifice, and the quest for identity. The intricate world-building that authors achieve in fantasy novels not only creates an immersive experience but also invites readers to ponder deeper philosophical questions about morality, power, and the human condition.

Ultimately, the power of this transformative journey through the pages of a book can inspire us, challenge our perspectives, and ignite our imaginations, making the reading experience one of the most enriching aspects of our lives. North is the Night did just that for me personally and I'm sure that other readers will agree. If you haven't yet checked this book out, I encourage you to do so now or in the near future. The Review

“North is the Night” is a split narrative novel following two lifelong friends from a small Finnish town, the first being Siiri Jarintyttär and the other Aina Taavintyttär. These two women have not only their friendship challenged, but also their beliefs of the world around them and their self-perceptions. Author, Emily Rath weaves a tantalizing and multifaceted story in “North is the Night”. Her writing was powerful and expressive giving the characters qualities of realism. This was such a beautiful novel filled with love, heartbreak, fantasy, and magic. I absolutely cannot wait for the next book!
