Was it just me or did anyone else who has read this book feel a little tingle of eerieness that this book was set in what would be present day?!? With everything going on in the world today, from the political unrest and social division to environmental crises and technological advancements, the likeness between the book's setting and our society today are telling. It's mind-boggling that a speculative fiction author in 1993 had the curious ability to predict the trajectory of the world and humanity's challenges and struggles. The depiction of this post-apocalyptic world served as a haunting backdrop, one that invited its readers to reflect on the fragile nature that is civilization and the potential outcomes of our choices. The author's speculative insights into human nature, societal breakdown, and the complexities of survival in a fractured world are deeply ingrained with the anxieties and fears that many people experience today.
The themes presented such as isolation, desperation, and the quest for hope in what feels like dire circumstances feel all too relevant, as if the narrative were created in response to the very events unfolding around us. The dark sensations that accompany the reading of this book are a testament to its unending relevance and the author's remarkable foretelling. It serves as a reminder that literature can often mirror reality in unexpected ways, providing insights that resonate long after the pages have been turned. Through the experience of reading this tale we not only explore a fictional world, but are also begged to reflect on our own decisions. We are asked to consider what lies ahead, and how we might navigate the complexities of the existence in our world which feels increasingly problematic. We can consider this story, a cautionary tale that urges us to be vigilant and proactive in shaping a better world.
The Review
“Parable of the Sower” follows Lauren Olamina, a young woman who has hyper-empathy, while she navigates a post-apocalyptic life in California. While the world around her is filled with horrifying happenings, Lauren manages to fight for survival and create hope by beginning a new faith. I found that while this book can be considered dark as it showcases the darker side of human nature with the world seemingly crumbling around them, it also presents the bright side of human nature, the will to survive and create a new future. I loved main character Lauren, as she grows from a sheltered child to a strong-willed adult woman with sheer determination and tenacity. Author, Octavia E. Butler, has earned a high place in my reading world and I can’t wait to devour more of their books!
