Even from a young age, I always gravitated towards hanging around with older people, drawn to their experiences and the wisdom they had accumulated over the years. There was something captivating about the way they interacted with one another, sharing anecdotes and engaging in lively conversations that often spanned a wide range of topics. I loved to sit quietly in the corner, my eyes wide with curiosity, listening intently as adults shot the breeze, exchanging stories about life long before I was around. Each tale was like a window into a different world, filled with lessons learned, adventures undertaken, and moments of joy and sorrow that shaped their lives. This early fascination with the narratives of those who had come before me instilled in me a deep appreciation for history and the human experience. I often found myself imagining what it would have been like to live through the events they described, to feel the emotions they conveyed, and to navigate the challenges they faced.

Their stories were not just entertainment; they were a bridge connecting me to a past I could only dream of experiencing firsthand. I think that's the kind of gravitational pull this book had on me. It intrigued me with a sense of nostalgic overtone that resonated deeply within my soul. The pages promised to transport me to a time filled with rich experiences and profound insights, much like the conversations I had cherished as a child. I really looked forward to diving into its pages, eager to uncover the layers of meaning woven into the text and to discover the characters' journeys that mirrored the tales I had once heard. Each chapter felt like an invitation to explore the depths of human emotion and the complexities of life, igniting within me a desire to learn and grow through the stories of others.

The Review

“Sex, Death, and Diane” features main character Sara in the 80’s as she transitions from an average teenage female to one diagnosed with Leukemia. This book reminded me of sitting with a mom or grandma and just listening to them tell stories from throughout their life. There was a nostalgic feel to the way the author wrote each chapter. I found it compelling in that it touched on many topics including mental health, the AIDS epidemic, Cancer, coming of age, sexuality (straight & queer), social justice, & death. I think the story overall was a diamond in the rough. With some polishing, editing, and additional proofreading I think this could be really great.
