The more books I read that fall under the romance genre, the more I'm beginning to realize what tropes really seem to wrangle me in and capture my imagination. There is something undeniably enchanting about the way certain themes appear in romantic literature, and with each story, I find myself falling deeper into the intricatricacies of emotion and relationships that these narratives weave. One such book that truly grabbed my interest was Southern by Design, which captivated me with its promise of a second chance romance. This trope, in particular interests me as it explores the complexities of love that can endure the test of time and circumstance. The idea that two people, once separated by life’s unpredictable twists and turns, can find their way back to each other is both heart-melting and inspiring. It brings to mind a sense of hope that love can be rekindled, and that past mistakes can be forgiven, allowing for growth and deeper connections.
As I dive deeper into the romance genre, I am also beginning to appreciate stories that, in essence, mirror real life. These narratives often feature characters who are relatable by way of challenges, misunderstandings, personal growth, and the pursuit of happiness amongst life’s chaos. I find myself connecting with protagonists who navigate the ups and downs of relationships, as their experiences sometimes remind me of situations that I have encountered in life or lives of people I've known. This authenticity adds a layer of depth to the stories, making the characters’ journeys feel more genuine and impactful. Reality in romance novels not only entertains but also provides insight into the human condition, revealing the elaborateness of love and the multitude of ways it can manifest in our lives. I'm excited to uncover more stories that resonate with me, particularly those that embrace the second chance romance trope and depict the realities of love in a way that feels true to life. I look forward to discovering even more narratives that tug at my heartstrings and challenge my perceptions of love.
The Review
“Southern By Design” follows Magnolia “Mack” Suffolk, an interior designer in Charleston, South Carolina as she navigates life following an unfortunate and very public incident involving her husband. Along with reeling from this incident she also has to square off frequently with her highly opinionated and judgmental mother whom she has hilariously deemed “Magnolia the dragon”. The story sways from present day to 15 years prior providing the backstory for how our main character arrived at where she is today and the things that have affected not only her but also her mother up until present day. This story had moments of grittiness but ends tenderly and emotionally. I loved the realistic nature of the story and also the tidbits of interior design that were included throughout. I found Magnolia Sr. to be unlikable in most of the book but by the end I felt like I could understand her more. This was a pleasant read and would recommend if you enjoy stories with a good redemption arc.
