With as much as I read compounded with my usual mama / wife duties, I don't spend as much time aimlessly scrolling the clock app as much as I used too. However, before the brief and ridiculous shutdown of said app, I did spend an obnoxious amount of time on there and at one point I came across a video by author Hadley Grey. If my memory suits me, she was looking for readers for her upcoming book. After listening to her describe her book and what it was about I immediately decided to reach out to try and become an ARC reader. Shortly thereafter, I was contacted in return and Hadley responded that she wasn't quite at the ARC reader stage as of yet but she would let me know when the book was ready for that stage. I honestly did not think I would hear anything further after that last correspondence but to my surprise, Hadley did wind up reaching out later down the road when Surrender to Love was ready for ARC readers.
I was so excited to read this book, I think what drew me to it was a few things. One, the author herself, she seemed very genuine and she was just herself, authentic, which in a world of not everything is what it seems, I really appreciate those characteristics in people. Two, the premise of the book was a romance with a veteran and well, that connects to my own personal love story with my spouse whom is a veteran. Finally, reason three, who doesn't love romance? Ok, I know there's people who don't but I think they're missing out. With all that said, I dove in head first and finished reading the book in its entirety within five days and I was left not only satisfied but also wanting more. I am now eagerly awaiting the next book staring two of the side characters from this book and I absolutely cannot wait.
The Review
“Surrender to Love” centers around Elizabeth “Liz” Callahan, a high school art teacher who is recently single and decides in order to get past her failed relationship that she will shoot her shot at becoming the muralist for the new veteran center building “Civ Div”. When she shows up for her interview appointment she’s shocked to see the interviewer is her old high school crush and veteran Luke Keller. Luke is a wealthy self-made man who the tabloids erroneously dubbed a “love them and leave them” type of man but deep down he had always been in love with Liz. Upon seeing each other for the first time in years, a spark is ignited but neither knows whether the spark will flame or fizzle. I enjoyed this story so much. I felt like the characters and the narrative itself had so much depth. The supporting characters were just as interesting as the main characters, which is great news considering the next book in the series focuses on two of these characters. I loved seeing a positive romance involving a veteran which you don’t see often. Author, Hadley Grey, created a believable and realistic story that I think any romance lover could enjoy. I will definitely be reading the next book!
