When I first picked this book up, I questioned myself about how much I would be able to connect with the overall storyline. After all, I am neither a young man living in America, nor a young Black man navigating the complexities of life in America. The initial hesitation stemmed from the fear that the experiences portrayed in the narrative would be removed from my own, that I would struggle to find any common ground. However, as I dove deeper into the pages, I discovered that there were numerous other aspects of the story that resonated with me on a profound level. Rich, the main character of the story, embodies a struggle that goes beyond a specific demographic. His journey is marked by the universal challenges of being a teenager, a tumultuous period filled with confusion, self-discovery, and the quest for identity. As I followed Rich’s experiences, I felt a kindred spirit with him, recognizing the raw emotions and the intense pressures that come with being a teenager. Life is hard enough during this transitional phase, as young individuals juggle the expectations of their families, the pressures of society, and their own internal conflicts.

Then when you compound this already difficult period of life with additional factors like socioeconomic challenges, racial discrimination, or the weight of societal expectations, the struggle becomes even more pronounced. Rich faces obstacles that are not just personal but also systemic, reflecting a reality that many young people encounter today. Throughout the story, I found myself relating to Rich’s feelings of isolation and longing for acceptance, emotions that are all too familiar during these formative years. The way he navigates friendships, confronts his fears, and seeks to carve out his own path resonated deeply with my own experiences of growing up. It became increasingly clear that the themes of resilience, identity, and the quest for belonging are universal, bridging the gaps between diverse backgrounds and life experiences.

In essence, this book illuminated that while our cultural background and circumstances may be different, we can find empathy and understanding in the stories of others. Rich’s journey is not just about the challenges he faces as a young Black man in America, it’s about the broader human experience of seeking connection, grappling with identity, and striving to overcome the obstacles that life presents. Through Rich, I was able to reflect on my own journey and the multitude of ways in which we all seek to find our place in the world, making this book a deeply impactful and profound for anyone to read, regardless of their background or age. Much to my surprise, I also realized that this story is one of many in a series by author, Elayne Hayes, and I look forward to reading more from her.

The Review

Overall, I really enjoyed reading this story which follows a blip in the life of sixteen year old Rich, a city boy who moves back to a small town following an unfortunate incident involving his mother. This story was moving and it really captured the essence of what the teenage years can be like. Add on top of that, being a young Black man who is surrounded by a chaotic environment and it makes life even that more heavy. There were some minor issues through the book that could be improved with another swift round of proofreading, but I don’t think it affected the overall impact of the story. This felt like a good book for any teenager or young adult because it had some powerful life messages throughout, would recommend.
